Cape Town is at its best during these months, with long sunny days, warm weather and the Winelands in full summer rhythm.

⭐ DRY SEASON — BEST FOR SAFARIThis is the classic safari season in Greater Kruger and Sabi Sand. Vegetation is thinner, wildlife gathers around water sources and game viewing is particularly rewarding. Days are usually dry and sunny, while mornings and evenings can be cool. The most sought-after lodges can fill well in advance, especially in July and August.

SHOULDER SEASON — IDEAL FOR COMBININGA particularly attractive time for travellers who want to combine safari with Cape Town. The bush remains relatively dry and wildlife viewing is still excellent, while spring begins to transform the Cape. It is one of the best windows for experiencing two very different sides of South Africa in the same journey.

What travellers ask us most about South Africa
When is the best time to go on safari in South Africa?
For Kruger and Sabi Sand, the dry season from May to September is generally the best time for safari. Vegetation is thinner, wildlife gathers around water sources and game viewing is especially rewarding.
For Cape Town, November to February brings long summer days and warm weather, while September and October are excellent if you want to combine safari with the Cape in one journey.
How many days do I need for a trip to South Africa?
We recommend a minimum of 8–10 nights for a well-balanced journey: around 4–5 nights on safari in Sabi Sand, Greater Kruger or Madikwe, followed by 3–4 nights in Cape Town, ideally with time in the Winelands.
If you add the Garden Route, Eastern Cape or another region, allow around 12–14 nights.
South Africa is best enjoyed without rushing — there is always another reason to stay a little longer.
Are there malaria-free safaris in South Africa?
Yes. South Africa has several excellent malaria-free safari areas, including Madikwe and reserves in the Eastern Cape, such as Kwandwe, Kariega and Shamwari. These regions can be especially appealing for families with young children or travellers who prefer to avoid malaria-risk areas. For anyone with medical concerns, malaria advice should always be confirmed with a healthcare professional before travel.
What is Sabi Sand, and why is it so special?
Sabi Sand is a collection of private game reserves bordering Kruger National Park. With no fences separating the reserves from Kruger, wildlife moves freely across a vast ecosystem.

Can I combine safari with Cape Town in the same trip?
Absolutely — it is one of the most popular ways to experience South Africa.
A typical itinerary combines 4–5 nights on safari in Greater Kruger or Sabi Sand with 3–4 nights in Cape Town, often adding time in the Cape Winelands. Domestic connections make it easy to move between the safari regions and the Cape.
The result is one of South Africa’s great strengths: exceptional wildlife, food, wine, mountains and ocean in a single journey.
How much does a luxury safari in South Africa cost?
Most of our tailor-made South Africa journeys start from around US$6,000 per person, depending on the season, length of stay and lodges selected.
Premium properties in Sabi Sand, including Londolozi, Singita and MalaMala, can increase the overall cost considerably, particularly during peak periods. Madikwe and selected Eastern Cape reserves can offer excellent safari experiences at a somewhat lower price point.
Do I need a visa to enter South Africa?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Some passport holders can enter South Africa visa-free for short tourist stays, while others need to obtain a visa or may be eligible for the new Electronic Travel Authorisation system. South Africa does not generally issue tourist visas on arrival for travellers who require one.
