Rwanda — Africa’s most intimate encounter
Stand just metres away from a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Only here, only in Rwanda. One of Africa’s most exclusive, responsible and unforgettable wildlife experiences.
LUXURY TRAVEL TO RWANDA
Rwanda is more than a destination — it is an experience that changes the way you see Africa.
Fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas remain in the wild, all living within a volcanic forest ecosystem shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwanda offers one of the most carefully managed and exclusive ways to encounter them. For one extraordinary hour, you sit just metres away from a habituated gorilla family in its natural habitat — mothers with infants, dominant silverbacks and young gorillas playing in the vegetation around you. Few wildlife experiences anywhere in the world feel this intimate.Rwanda has also become one of Africa’s most compelling conservation and luxury-travel destinations, combining exceptional hospitality with remarkable organisation and a strong commitment to protecting its natural heritage. At Siente Africa, we design every Rwanda journey around the best available gorilla permits and a carefully curated selection of exceptional lodges near Volcanoes National Park.
WHY CHOOSE RWANDA
Five reasons to travel to Rwanda
One of Africa’s most intimate wildlife encounters
Rwanda issues a strictly limited number of gorilla trekking permits each day, making the experience highly controlled and deeply personal. Spending an hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in the wild is one of Africa’s most moving wildlife encounters.
A conservation model that has changed the story
Mountain gorilla numbers have increased in recent decades, thanks in part to long-term conservation efforts, responsible tourism and community involvement. In Rwanda, a portion of tourism revenue supports local communities around the parks, helping conservation and livelihoods go hand in hand.
Some of Africa’s most exceptional luxury lodges
Bisate Lodge, Singita Kwitonda and One&Only Gorilla’s Nest are among the continent’s most celebrated safari properties. Expect striking architecture, dramatic Virunga views and a level of service designed around one of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences.
Three remarkable experiences in one country
Rwanda brings together three very different journeys in a surprisingly compact destination: mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe and classic safari in Akagera.
Safe, sophisticated and remarkably well organised
Rwanda is known for its cleanliness, strong tourism infrastructure and efficient travel experience. Kigali is one of Africa’s most polished capitals, while the country’s best lodges offer a level of hospitality that stands comfortably alongside the continent’s leading luxury destinations.
“Standing before a mountain gorilla changes the way you feel part of the world.”

WHEN TO GO
Best time to travel to Rwanda
Mar — May
LONG RAINS — LUSH FORESTSThe forests are at their most vivid during the long rains, with intense greenery, dramatic light and a beautifully atmospheric landscape.
Gorilla trekking can be more demanding, however, as trails become muddy and slippery. Rates may be more attractive, but this is usually better suited to experienced travellers or those comfortable with wetter conditions.
Jun — Sep
⭐ LONG DRY SEASON — BEST TIME TO TRAVELThis is the classic season for gorilla trekking, with generally drier trails, pleasant temperatures at altitude and easier conditions in the forest.
It is also an excellent time to combine Rwanda with Kenya or Tanzania, especially if you want to add the Great Migration to the journey. Gorilla permits are limited, so for peak-season travel we recommend booking well in advance.
Dec — Feb
⭐ SHORT DRY SEASON — EXCELLENT ALTERNATIVEThis is another very good time to visit, with drier conditions, fewer visitors than in July and August, and excellent trekking conditions. It is particularly attractive for travellers planning a Christmas or New Year journey, or those who cannot travel during the northern summer.
ACCOMMODATION

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What travellers ask us most about Rwanda
When is the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking?
The long dry season, from June to September, is generally the best time for gorilla trekking, with drier trails, good visibility in the forest and pleasant temperatures at altitude.
The short dry season, from December to February, is another excellent option and can feel slightly quieter. Gorilla trekking is still possible during the rainy seasons, from March to May and again around October and November, although trails can be muddier and more demanding.
Because gorilla permits are limited, we recommend booking well in advance, especially for peak travel months.
How many days do I need for a trip to Rwanda?
For a well-rounded Rwanda journey, we recommend around 6–8 nights. For a focused gorilla experience, 3 nights in Volcanoes National Park can work well, allowing time to arrive, acclimatise and complete one or two trekking days. If you add Nyungwe Forest or Akagera, allow around 8–9 nights in total.
Rwanda also combines beautifully with Kenya or Tanzania for a longer East African journey.
What is gorilla trekking, and how does it work?
Gorilla trekking involves hiking through the volcanic forest with experienced park rangers to locate one of the habituated mountain gorilla families. The trek can last anywhere from around 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorillas that day. Once the group is reached, visitors are allowed to spend a limited amount of time observing the gorillas in their natural habitat. The terrain can be steep, muddy and uneven, and the experience takes place at altitude, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
How much does a gorilla permit cost in Rwanda?
A gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda currently costs US$1,500 per person for international visitors. The fee reflects Rwanda’s high-value, low-volume approach to gorilla tourism, helping to limit visitor numbers and support conservation. At Siente Africa, we arrange gorilla permits as part of the complete journey planning process, securing them as early as possible once your travel dates are confirmed.
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. The terrain can be steep, muddy and uneven, and the length of the trek varies depending on the location of the gorilla family that day.
Local porters are available and can make the experience significantly easier, particularly on steeper sections. The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years. At Siente Africa, we coordinate the practical details in advance so the experience is as comfortable and well prepared as possible.
Can Rwanda be combined with Kenya or Tanzania?
Absolutely. It is one of the most rewarding combinations in East Africa. Rwanda can be paired with the Maasai Mara or Serengeti, creating a journey that combines intimate gorilla trekking with a classic savannah safari. Zanzibar can also be added for a few days beside the Indian Ocean. Rwanda works beautifully either at the beginning or the end of a longer East African itinerary.
Do I need a visa to enter Rwanda?
Rwanda allows citizens of all countries to obtain a visa on arrival without applying in advance, although visa exemptions and fees vary by nationality. Travellers who are not visa-exempt may also apply online before departure. A standard single-entry visitor visa currently costs up to US$50. Rwanda also offers the East Africa Tourist Visa for eligible travellers visiting Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on the same journey; the current fee is US$100. As part of your journey planning, Siente África will confirm the latest entry requirements for your passport before you travel.
