LUXURY SAFARIS IN BOTSWANA

Botswana is not simply a safari — it is safari at its purest.

Botswana chose one of the world’s most discerning tourism models decades ago: fewer visitors, higher value, minimal impact. The result is a country where vast areas of land are protected, private concessions offer exceptional exclusivity, and wildlife encounters rank among the finest on the continent.
The Okavango Delta — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s great inland deltas — is its crown jewel: a remarkable aquatic wilderness set within the Kalahari, best experienced from the water or from above.
At Siente África, every Botswana safari is designed entirely around you, with access to some of Africa’s most remote and exclusive camps.

WHY CHOOSE BOTSWANA

Five reasons to safari in Botswana

01

The Okavango Delta — unlike anywhere else on Earth

A vast network of rivers, channels and islands spilling into the Kalahari. Explore by mokoro — the traditional dugout canoe — by boat, on foot and by safari vehicle, all within the same extraordinary landscape.

02

Africa’s largest elephant population

Botswana is home to more than 130,000 elephants — the largest population on the continent. In Chobe, the sight of vast herds gathering along the river is one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles.

03

Low-density tourism by design

Botswana deliberately limits visitor numbers across many of its safari concessions. No convoys of vehicles, no mass tourism — just wilderness, wildlife and a genuine sense of exclusivity.

04

Exceptional predator sightings in Linyanti

The concessions of Linyanti and Kwando, in northern Botswana, are renowned for remarkable concentrations of lions, leopards, cheetahs and African wild dogs — often enjoyed with very few other vehicles in sight.

05

Some of Africa’s most remote and exclusive camps

Mombo Camp, Vumbura Plains, Duba Plains — Botswana is home to safari properties consistently ranked among the finest in the world. Many sit within vast private concessions, creating an extraordinary sense of space and seclusion.

“Botswana offers a glimpse of Africa as it once was — wild, remote and untouched by mass tourism.”

WHEN TO GO

Best time for a safari in Botswana

Nov — Apr

GREEN SEASON — HIGH DELTA & MAKGADIKGADI

The rains transform the Delta, bringing its waterways to life and creating beautiful conditions for water-based activities. In Makgadikgadi, the zebra migration arrives with the first rains, usually from November to December. Expect fewer visitors and more attractive rates.

May — Oct

⭐ DRY SEASON — BEST FOR SAFARI

This is the classic safari season: vegetation is lower, wildlife gathers around permanent water sources, and game viewing is exceptional across the country. Delta water levels begin to rise from June. In Linyanti and Chobe, July to September are particularly rewarding months. Booking well in advance is highly recommended.

Jun — Aug

PEAK DELTA SEASON — HIGH WATER IN THE OKAVANGO

The Okavango’s annual flood reaches its peak between June and August, transforming the Delta into a maze of navigable channels. This is one of the best times for mokoro and boating safaris, when the landscape is at its most spectacular.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What travellers ask us most about Botswana

When is the best time to go on safari in Botswana?

The dry season — from May to October — is generally considered the best time for safari, with lower vegetation, wildlife gathering around permanent water sources, and exceptional game viewing. In the Okavango Delta, water levels typically rise from June and remain high through the winter months, creating superb conditions for mokoro and boating safaris. The green season, from November to April, has its own appeal: fewer visitors, dramatic landscapes, prolific birdlife and the zebra migration in Makgadikgadi.

How many days do I need for a Botswana safari?

We recommend a minimum of 7–9 nights to combine two distinct regions — for example, the Okavango Delta with Chobe or Linyanti. Ideally, allow at least three nights in each area to fully experience its rhythm and wildlife.

Botswana rewards a slower pace, and its sense of remoteness and exclusivity deserves time. For a more extensive journey including Makgadikgadi, we recommend around 10–12 nights.

How much does a luxury safari in Botswana cost?

Botswana is one of Africa’s most exclusive safari destinations, and its low-volume, high-value tourism model means rates are generally higher than in destinations such as Kenya or South Africa.

Most of our luxury Botswana safaris start from approximately US$10,000–12,000 per person for a week, depending on the season, camps selected and internal flights. Iconic properties such as Mombo Camp sit among the most exclusive — and expensive — safari lodges in Africa.

What is the Okavango Delta, and why is it so special?

The Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most extraordinary natural landscapes. The Okavango River rises in the highlands of Angola and, rather than reaching the sea, spreads across the Kalahari Basin in Botswana, creating a vast network of channels, lagoons, floodplains and islands.

Covering thousands of square kilometres, this UNESCO World Heritage Site supports remarkable biodiversity, including elephants, hippos, crocodiles, predators and hundreds of bird species. Its combination of land- and water-based safari experiences makes it unlike anywhere else in Africa.

What is a mokoro safari?

A mokoro is the traditional canoe of the Okavango Delta, guided by a local poler who navigates the waterways while standing and using a long pole. It offers one of the quietest and most intimate ways to experience the African wilderness — gliding past birdlife, aquatic vegetation and wildlife at water level, with no engine and almost no sound. It is a completely different perspective from a traditional game drive.

Can Botswana be combined with South Africa or Zimbabwe?

Yes — it is one of the most popular combinations. Botswana and South Africa complement each other beautifully: Sabi Sand offers the classic Big Five safari experience and exceptional leopard sightings, while the Okavango Delta provides a completely different, water-based safari experience.

Zimbabwe is equally easy to combine, allowing you to add Victoria Falls — one of Africa’s great natural wonders — at the end of your journey. From Kasane, in northern Botswana, the Falls are only around 80 km away.

Do I need a visa to enter Botswana?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Citizens of many countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Spain, can generally enter Botswana for short tourist stays without obtaining a visa in advance.

As part of your journey planning, Siente África will confirm the latest entry requirements for your nationality before you travel.
