WHY CHOOSE TANZANIA
Five reasons to safari in Tanzania
The Serengeti — one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles
More than a million wildebeest move through the Serengeti ecosystem as part of the Great Migration, joined by vast herds of zebra and other plains game. Unlike in Kenya, where the migration is most visible seasonally in the Maasai Mara, the herds remain within Tanzania for much of the year as they move through different areas of the Serengeti.
The Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most extraordinary safari landscapes, with an exceptional concentration of wildlife living within its vast volcanic caldera. It is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the Big Five in a relatively compact area, including the possibility of encountering black rhino.
Safari and beach in one seamless journey
Tanzania makes it remarkably easy to combine exceptional safari with the Indian Ocean. After the Serengeti, Ngorongoro or Tarangire, you can continue to Zanzibar, Pemba or Mafia Island for a completely different rhythm — white-sand beaches, warm water and time to slow down.
Two safari worlds: north and south
The northern circuit brings together the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire — some of Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife areas.
In the south, Ruaha and Nyerere offer a more remote style of safari, with fewer vehicles, vast wilderness and a stronger sense of seclusion.
Some of Africa’s most remarkable safari lodges
From Singita Grumeti and Sayari Camp to Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti and other exceptional properties, Tanzania offers an extraordinary range of high-end safari experiences in some of the continent’s most dramatic landscapes.
“Tanzania reminds you that truly wild places still exist.”

WHEN TO GO
Best time for a safari in Tanzania
Jan — Mar
⭐ CALVING SEASON — NDUTUThis is the calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, when vast numbers of wildebeest give birth across the plains. January and February are particularly rewarding, with intense predator activity and dramatic wildlife encounters.
Jun — Oct
⭐ PEAK SEASON — NORTHERN SERENGETIThis is one of the best periods for the northern Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The dry season brings excellent wildlife viewing, thinner vegetation and, later in the season, the possibility of witnessing the migration moving toward and across the Mara River. The most sought-after camps and lodges can fill many months in advance.
Nov — Dec
GREEN SEASONThe short rains transform the landscape, bringing fresh grass, dramatic skies and fewer visitors. Wildlife remains excellent, rates can be more attractive and the Serengeti feels greener, quieter and especially rewarding for photography.

What travellers ask us most about Tanzania
When is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?
Tanzania offers excellent safari experiences throughout the year, with different regions coming into their own in different seasons.
The dry season from June to October is especially good for the northern Serengeti and Ngorongoro, with excellent wildlife viewing and the possibility of following the Great Migration through the north.
January and February are particularly special in the Ndutu area and southern Serengeti, when the calving season brings large numbers of newborn wildebeest and increased predator activity.
How many days do I need for a safari in Tanzania?
We recommend a minimum of 7 nights for the classic northern circuit, combining the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Tarangire.
If you add Zanzibar, allow around 10–12 nights in total. For travellers who also want to explore southern Tanzania, including Ruaha or Nyerere, around 12–14 nights allows you to experience both safari regions without rushing.
How much does a luxury safari in Tanzania cost?
Most of our tailor-made Tanzania safaris start from around US$6,000 per person, depending on the season, length of stay and lodges selected.
High-end properties and private-concession camps in and around the Serengeti can increase the cost considerably, particularly during peak migration periods, when availability is also much more limited.
What is the difference between Tanzania and Kenya for safari?
Kenya and Tanzania share the same greater migration ecosystem, with the Maasai Mara and Serengeti forming two parts of one vast wildlife landscape.
Tanzania offers a broader variety of safari circuits, including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and the more remote southern parks such as Ruaha and Nyerere. Kenya is particularly famous for the Maasai Mara and can offer slightly simpler logistics on some itineraries.
Many travellers choose to combine both countries in a 10–14 night East African journey.
What is the Great Migration, and where can I see it in Tanzania?
The Great Migration is one of the world’s greatest wildlife movements, with vast herds of wildebeest, zebra and other plains game moving continuously through the Serengeti–Maasai Mara ecosystem.
In Tanzania, the herds can be followed through different regions at different times of year: the calving season around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti from roughly January to March, the gradual movement north through the central and western Serengeti during the following months, and the northern Serengeti from around July onwards, when river crossings may occur. The exact timing varies each year with rainfall and grazing conditions, which is why choosing the right region is just as important as choosing the right month.
Can I combine a Tanzania safari with the beach?
Absolutely. It is one of Tanzania’s great advantages.
Zanzibar is the classic complement to a safari, with convenient air connections from the main safari regions, white-sand beaches, coral reefs and a wide choice of luxury resorts. A typical itinerary combines around 6–7 nights on safari with 3–5 nights in Zanzibar, although Pemba and Mafia Island are excellent alternatives for travellers looking for something quieter and more remote.
Do I need a visa to enter Tanzania?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travellers need a visa to enter Tanzania and may be able to apply online through Tanzania’s official eVisa system before travelling, while requirements can differ by passport. As part of your journey planning, Siente África will confirm the latest entry requirements for your nationality and guide you through the necessary documentation.
