What Makes Volcanoes National Park Unique?
Mountain Gorilla Trekking: An Unforgettable Encounter
There are only around 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the world, and Rwanda offers one of the most extraordinary opportunities to observe them in their natural habitat.
Permits are strictly limited (96 per day) to protect the species and ensure an exclusive, low-impact experience.
The trekking experience can vary between 1 and 6 hours depending on the location of the assigned gorilla family.
Close Encounters → Once the gorilla family is located, visitors are allowed to spend up to one hour observing them at close range.
Small Groups (maximum 8 people per gorilla family), ensuring a more intimate and personalized experience.
This face-to-face encounter with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is considered one of the most emotional and exclusive wildlife experiences in Africa.

The Story of Dian Fossey and Gorilla Conservation
Dian Fossey dedicated her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.
Her work inspired the book and film Gorillas in the Mist, which brought global attention to the critical situation facing endangered mountain gorillas.
Today, her legacy continues through the Karisoke Research Center and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, organizations that remain deeply committed to the conservation and protection of these extraordinary primates.
Visitors can hike to the resting place of Dian Fossey, paying tribute to her lifelong commitment to gorilla conservation.
Rwanda has achieved remarkable success in protecting mountain gorillas, becoming a global model for sustainable ecotourism and conservation-led travel.
