LUXURY TRAVEL IN ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s best-kept safari secrets.

Victoria Falls is one of the world’s great natural wonders, stretching for more than 1.7 kilometres along the Zambezi River and plunging over 100 metres into the gorge below. At high water, the spray rises above the falls and creates a rainforest-like ecosystem along the edge of the gorge. But Zimbabwe is far more than Victoria Falls. Hwange National Park is renowned for its vast elephant herds and exceptional dry-season wildlife viewing, while Mana Pools, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers some of Africa’s most immersive safari experiences, including walking safaris and canoeing along the Zambezi. Zimbabwe is also celebrated for the quality of its professional guides and the depth of its safari tradition. At Siente Africa, we design each Zimbabwe journey to combine the drama of Victoria Falls with the country’s remarkable wilderness areas, exceptional lodges and deeply personal safari experiences.

WHY CHOOSE ZIMBABWE

Five reasons to travel to Zimbabwe

01

Victoria Falls — one of Africa’s great natural wonders

Stretching for more than 1.7 kilometres along the Zambezi River and dropping over 100 metres into the gorge below, Victoria Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls on Earth. From the Zimbabwean side, the viewpoints offer an exceptional sense of scale, especially when the river is running high and the spray rises above the gorge.

02

Hwange — extraordinary elephant country

Hwange National Park is famous for its vast elephant herds, particularly during the dry season when wildlife gathers around the park’s waterholes. It is also one of Zimbabwe’s most rewarding safari areas for predators, plains game and wild dogs, with a strong sense of wilderness and relatively few vehicles.

03

Mana Pools — one of Africa’s most immersive safari experiences

Mana Pools offers a style of safari that feels especially wild and intimate. Canoeing along the Zambezi, walking beneath albida trees and watching elephants move through the floodplain create a completely different safari rhythm.
As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of Zimbabwe’s most distinctive wilderness areas.

04

A country renowned for exceptional safari guiding

Zimbabwe has one of Africa’s strongest traditions of professional guiding, particularly for walking safaris and close observation of animal behaviour. The best guides combine fieldcraft, interpretation and deep knowledge of the landscape in a way that adds enormous depth to the safari experience.

05

A natural gateway to Southern Africa

Victoria Falls connects easily with Botswana, Zambia and South Africa, making Zimbabwe an excellent part of a wider Southern Africa itinerary. It works especially well in journeys combining the falls with safari in Hwange, Botswana’s Chobe or Okavango Delta, or onward travel to South Africa.

“In Hwange, you begin to understand why elephants define so much of Africa’s imagination.”

WHEN TO GO

Best time to travel to Zimbabwe

Feb — Apr

GREEN SEASON — VICTORIA FALLS AT HIGH WATER

Victoria Falls builds toward some of its highest water levels during this period, creating an especially dramatic spectacle, although heavy spray can sometimes obscure parts of the gorge.
The landscapes are green and lush, with excellent birdlife and many young animals. Safari viewing can be more challenging than in the dry season, but the scenery is at its most vibrant.

Jun — Oct

⭐ DRY SEASON — BEST FOR SAFARI

This is the classic safari season in Hwange and Mana Pools. Vegetation is thinner, wildlife gathers around permanent water sources and game viewing becomes increasingly rewarding as the dry season progresses.
Victoria Falls can still have good flow in June and July, while September and October bring hotter temperatures and some of the most concentrated wildlife sightings of the year.

Nov — Jan

EARLY RAINS — FEWER VISITORS

The first rains transform the landscape, bringing fresh green vegetation, dramatic skies and fewer travellers. Wildlife becomes more dispersed as natural water sources return, but the season is excellent for birding, photography and travellers looking for a quieter experience. Victoria Falls is generally at lower flow toward the end of the dry season before levels begin to rise again with the rains.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What travellers ask us most about Zimbabwe

When is the best time to travel to Zimbabwe?

The dry season, from June to October, is generally the best time for safari. Vegetation is thinner, wildlife gathers around water sources and game viewing is especially rewarding in Hwange and Mana Pools. For Victoria Falls, water levels are usually at their most dramatic from around March to May, although heavy spray can sometimes limit visibility. June and July offer a particularly good balance between strong water flow at the Falls and excellent safari conditions.

How many days do I need for a trip to Zimbabwe?

We recommend around 8–11 nights for a well-rounded journey. A typical itinerary might include 2–3 nights at Victoria Falls, 3–4 nights in Hwange and 2–3 nights in Mana Pools. Victoria Falls deserves at least two full days if you want time for the viewpoints as well as experiences such as a helicopter flight, sunset cruise or other activities. For Hwange and Mana Pools, at least three nights in each area allows you to experience the safari at a more relaxed pace.

What exactly are Victoria Falls, and why are they so special?

Victoria Falls — known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke that Thunders” — form one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls.
The Zambezi River plunges across a broad basalt edge into a narrow gorge more than 100 metres below, creating an extraordinary combination of sound, spray and scale. During high-water periods, the mist supports a distinctive rainforest ecosystem along the edge of the gorge.
Victoria Falls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Southern Africa’s defining natural landmarks.

Is it better to see Victoria Falls from Zimbabwe or Zambia?

Both sides offer different and complementary perspectives. The Zimbabwean side generally provides the most extensive views of the Falls, with a longer series of viewpoints overlooking much of the curtain of water.
The Zambian side offers a closer and, in places, more intimate perspective, particularly around the eastern section of the Falls. Water levels also affect the experience considerably, especially during the drier months.
For many of our journeys, we base clients on the Zimbabwean side and, when time allows, include a visit to Zambia as well.

What makes a safari in Mana Pools different from other African parks?

Mana Pools offers one of Africa’s most immersive wilderness experiences. The combination of walking safaris, canoeing on the Zambezi and exceptional wildlife encounters on the floodplains creates a very different rhythm from a traditional vehicle-based safari.
The park is particularly famous for its elephants, some of which are known to stand on their hind legs to reach the pods of albida trees. Its open landscapes, mature woodland and strong tradition of walking safari also make Mana Pools especially rewarding for wildlife photography.

Can Zimbabwe be combined with Botswana or South Africa?

Absolutely. Zimbabwe combines extremely well with both.
Victoria Falls is close to Kasane and Chobe in Botswana, making it easy to continue into the Okavango Delta. A journey combining Victoria Falls, Hwange and Botswana offers three very different landscapes and safari experiences in one itinerary. South Africa is also straightforward to add, with air connections linking Victoria Falls with Johannesburg and onward connections to Cape Town and the Greater Kruger region. At Siente África, we coordinate the full itinerary and all the logistics between destinations.

Do I need a visa to enter Zimbabwe?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many travellers can obtain a visa on arrival in Zimbabwe, while others may need to arrange one in advance. The KAZA UniVisa may also be available for eligible travellers visiting both Zimbabwe and Zambia, making it particularly useful for journeys that include both sides of Victoria Falls. Availability, eligibility and fees can change, so entry requirements should always be checked for the specific passport before travel.
At Siente Africa, we confirm the latest visa and entry requirements for every traveller as part of the planning process.
